Fun drags at MoKan Dragway

Post by budweeks » Wed Jun 23, 2010 7:12 pm

All autocrossers are invited to come out to MoKan Dragway on July 9 to see what your autocross car will do in the quarter mile. Opie V. is actually the person setting this up, but he is even more computer illiterate than me so I get the job to post all the important info.

MoKan is near the Missouri/Kansas state line on Hwy 171, northwest of Joplin. It is an old strip that has been in business since 1961, and has a reputation of a relaxed atmosphere and good times. Friday nights are for anyone who wants to run their car. There is no prize money and the big boys and the crowds won't be there. I first raced there in 1964 in my '58 Ford with 4.11 gears. I think I beat a '56 Olds and a '55 Buick.

Gate opens at 6PM and runs are from 7PM-11PM. Entry is $15 per car. We're not sure if there is any cost for spectators or hangers-on. Be sure and bring your helmet.

Some of us did this a couple of years ago and had a great time. Mark F. came out on top of the autocrossers, but this year Opie has a new motor and Mark has an old motor so who knows. Maybe some other autocrosser will come that will blow the doors off everyone.

It seems that there are some natural rivalries that would make this even more fun. Of course there is Ford vs Chevy/Camaro vs Mustang. But what about WRX vs Evo? Or MR2 vs Miata? Maybe Corvette vs a Porsche? RX7 vs S2000? Hyundai vs Kia? Mini vs Maxicab? I don't know.

Anyway, come for a good time.

As of now, I plan to be there.

Just getting a chance to see that thing run the 1/4 mile would make the trip worthwhile.

I went to the drag strip three weeks ago and snapped a half shaft.

Flatty is banished from the track until I do the Z31 Turbo CV upgrade. :|

We'll be there! I'm bringing my truck and the stang. I've been wanting to see what my truck will run. If it beats the Mustang, Opie owes me a chocolate shake.

I'll be there with the 160K mi Formula. It ought to be broke in by now. You all better run at least low 13's to beat me.

When we did this two years ago, I was happy I finally had a car that would run in the 13s. I tried like hell in 1969 and never got there. Now I want to find out if the current Mustang has that same gumption. Don't forget Mark, Opie, Korry, etc. that I've only got a 4.6! (But more valves)

Scott, can you be coaxed to come and compare the Bullit to the Shelby?

Definitely street tires. This is not that important to use up an A6! Maybe I can recapture the drag race skills I used to have and get a hole shot. On the other hand, I guess I'll just show up and let the chips....and the rubber molecules....fall where they may.

My prediction:

I will prove to everyone that I have the slowest ESP car in OMR.

*sigh*

You know, we could all try to be the slowest, but that might not be as fun.
