Kudos to Chris & Everyone Else

Chris put together a nice course today that was technically challenging. I probably enjoyed the course as much as any I've driven at PCP, simply because the course forced me keep my head up, look ahead, and plan.

Nice job Chris, especially considering the way you had to work around defects in the asphalt.

I also thought it was exceptional that we were able to overcome our initial timing light difficulties and still get six runs per heat!!!!

I loved it. I was amazed that I was actually able to utalize the back of the lot!
i thought for sure that I made a lemon of a course early on. All the DNF's and cones hit. But when I got a chance to run it. I thought it was sweet!

I am however a lobster!

I loved the track! My tires didn't, but I don't care what they think anyways, that yelled the whole time.

Keep up the good course designs Chris! Maybe next course make it a little breezier with some room to open it up, just to change it up a bit!!!

Congrats on the course layout Chris, it was done very well. Yeah I noticed how many cars were DNFing down around the curve of the hill, but that's part of the nice technicality of it. I only DNF'd once on it, oh well, not too bad for how technical it was.

glad to here it went good today.... wish I could have been there...a good technical course would have been nice compared to 80mph st. louis event... :) I hope the cards work out so I can be at the next....

is the laptop accessible in the trailer?
I will do my best to get by tonight and pick it up.

does anyone have a accurate head count on attendance?
I'd like to fill out the audit form and leave that with Jeff so I don't get behind on them.

I have the laptop. A good majority of heat one's data is entered incorrectly in the laptop so I'm having to redo all of it. Unfortunately it's not as easy as directly editing it since somehow car's were entered into it in the wrong order as well. That and when I add or delete a car from the order to add it elsewhere the software doesn't move the penalties so those all have to be corrected. And when you edit something from heat one it affects heat two which I did correctly so then I have to sort through that...

Lesson? DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT just move on with the event unless the data is right. Holding a car at the line for 5 seconds is less work than what I'm having to do... :(

Remind me at the next event, and I'll supply you with unlimited pizza for your effort. I have a good idea of what NOT to do next time. I didn't know about clicking the "registered" button, and between that, the 2 or 3 cars with the same number, and the timing system filling up the system with random times due to the technical problems it was having, I'm sure it's a wreck of mismatched information inside there.

Next time it will go perfectly smooth... Sorry Matt :(

That reminds me of something important...

The Waiver Station/tech inspector should to make a couple things clear on the tech cards:

1) Fill out ALL information (I had some cards that weren't even signed!)
2) The cars Class should be listed on the card.
3) If possible, the cars number (for those with permanent numbers) need to be listed on the card.

Doing these things will make registration happen much more smoothly, and lessen the change for error significantly.

I'd like to do registration again with Matt. I learned a lot regarding the procedure and know next time has the opportunity to be a major improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.

all that data is on the tech cards, and its been a long time since I have seen one filled out fully. (hehe I don't think mine is even filled out totally but I know all the data that should be on mine ;) )

little things like that are easily overlooked, and can help allot to making registration run smooth.

Dont worry to much about the timing errors ;) it happens to everyone. and its certanly a good idea to hold the start if there is even a hint of errors. 5 min delay is much better than some of the 3 or 4 week nights going over errors :)

Its easy to overlook errors when the numbers are being inspected after the fact. :)

I'm going to look at the data today in my free time :) I'm sure it cant be all that bad.... ;) lol

I agree 100%. These were issues I had during the first event as well. I know the tech inspector is in a rush to do 50+ cars so missing a few is fine but it's rough on the participant to wait to get tech'ed in, then wait to get registered and find out that they can't register since their card isn't sigend, etc.

You can run it again and I'll spend a bit more time running through it with you. Don't worry about it. We have the hard copies and I sent scanned images and the database file to Jonathan to help me out. We'll figure it out but it's going to take some time.

There were about 25 wrong entries however correcting them moves around the rest of the data so I have to correct 54 drivers * 6 runs worth of data... That problem lies in the software (and now I know exactly what people's complaints with the software really come from). If the software were a little more flexible with the manipulation of the database this problem would take 5 minutes to correct...

k I have everything sorted out. I'm going to upload the file to Matt to check over and just verify a few entry's to double check the consistency.

Then he can upload the results if he is satisfied with it.


I will note this.

2 mistakes were made that need to be corrected

#1.
unique car numbers means ***UNIQUE CAR NUMBERS***
none of this one car is 7 and the other car is 07
this caused a huge mess and shall never be repeated PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

Its not that the software cant handle it, its that it makes a simple honest mistake *Easy to make*

The purpose of unique numbers was to eliminate simple honest mistakes.

#2.
Pay attention.
I think 80% of the errors were simple in-attention to detail, car number 7 on the line, car number 80 entered.
or car number 50 just left the line but it was never staged so now 35 is on the line and just got staged into the spot that 50 *should* have been.

attention is a 2 fold problem, its the computer person not focusing on the task at hand, and people walking up to ask questions :)
both are a nay nay situation :)

Now that said.

Thanks for being willing to put yourself at risk and at least try :)

We will get some better training out there and things will improve no worries :)
getting a copy of the demo would help out somewhat to. but mostly its a problem is in-attention. and believe me on the in-attention deal. more than once I would be running the computer and find myself playing catchup and fixing problems on the fly. its allot of work to do it on the fly. better to stall the event than spend as much time as has been spent the last 2 days between Matt and myself to correct timing errors :)

anyway ;) I'm trying to emphasize some points here, please dont take anything as me being harsh because its simple mistakes, no worries :)

Just trying to educate so things go smoother in the future.

oh yeah one last thing.

on the hard copy's we need to make sure that the times are always written down, even the DNF times.
DNF is a penalty, times are recorded for 100% of the valid runs.

it makes for some funny guesswork to matchup crosslinked runs when the paper copy does not list the time, just says DNF :)

Hey, thanks for the feedback, and I know next time will be smoother. I know it was attention to detail, and of course my luck would have it with the timing system being jacked and communication within the trailer that was less than optimal.

Never the less, we had a good crew and like I said, I know exactly what not to do, and I'm much more familiar with the software, so it will be perfect next time (noted on the "unique numbers" thing).

Also, during registration on next event, I think it would be good to reinforce the rule of tech cards being completely filled out. If they aren't, no registration until corrected. That being said, it should be both the tech inspectors responsibility and the drivers responsibility to ensure everything is on the card that needs to be on there to minimize errors.

Although I was far too green to correct errors that quickly in registration and remove the 50 random time entries the timing system popped into the computer ever other run, next time will be a different story :)

Thanks Matt & Brandon for fixing all those times and getting everything perfect!!!

Last autocross

Hey Guys,

Overall it was a good autocross. Thanks to all of you that worked hard to make sure it came off just fine. Yes, all didn't go perfect but everyone I talked to had a good time.

I think I helped contribute to the results difficulties because I forgot to check the cards very closely and the numbers not at all. It has been a while since I teched and I was scrambling to remember all the items that need to be checked during tech, as well as trying to find those damned Snell stickers inside people's helmets. Now that I will be a Solo Safety Steward in the future, I am much more safety conscious than before so I was probably more focused on that this time.

I do have a couple of suggestions that might help for next time.
1. If we had some kind of a cheat sheet or a card or something that listed all the responsibilities for each worker job (registration, timing, tech, etc.)to hand out at the event, whoever was doing that job for that particular event would have a good reminder of what to pay attention to. (Maybe only I need a reminder. Ha!) It would have helped this time if I had something like that to remind to check those extra things. A one-page sheet that we could hand out should be sufficient. Keep a bunch of copies in the trailer. Maybe tape one to the inside, and the outside. That way, as various people come in to do those various jobs, all will be on the same page (literally). The event chairman could make sure each person was given a copy at each event where they have one of those responsibilities.
2. Maybe we could have some kind of a helmet tech sticker so that we don't have to tech each helmet each event, just once a year. It could be as simple as a big sticker with someone's signature and a date or something like that. It would save some time.
