Some reminders for hot weather events:
  • Start your day hydrated
Drink water when you get up, and in the morning before it gets hot. Showing up dehydrated puts you behind the curve.
  • ...and stay hydrated
Take drinks of water regularly, whether you are thirsty or not, standing in the sun or not.
  • Shade your head
There is a lot of blood flowing to your head and neck. Wide-brimmed hats and cool, damp towel/wraps will help your comfort.
  • Bring (fresh) sunscreen
If it's expired or more than a few years old, throw it out.
  • Re-apply sunscreen throughout the day
Sunscreen doesn't work after it has been sweated off.
  • Make shade
If you are not working course, seek umbrellas and ez-up shelters.
  • Cool your racecar's interior
When not making runs, use window shades and towels over seats and steering wheels.
  • Report heat fatigue
If you feel nausea, dizziness, headaches, or other trappings of heat exhaustion, let an event official know. Your health is more important that falling down during a work assignment.
