I am in the process of purchasing a 1990 Honda Civic Si which is setup as a SCCA ITA or NASA H4 race car. Is there a class that I can run this car in for Auto crossing? I would like to get some seat time in the car before making a trip to the race track. I will need to buy a set of tires for auto-x but don't want to break the bank. What is a decent reasonably priced tire?

If you keep the car prepared to IT rules, you can run it in C Street Prepared (CSP).

From the rulebook:

Cars listed as eligible in and prepared to the current national Improved Touring rules are permitted to compete in their respective Street Prepared classes. Neither Street Prepared nor Improved Touring cars are permitted to interchange preparation rules. Improved Touring cars may use tires which are eligible under current IT rules even if they are not eligible in Street Prepared.

Do you want a sticky street tire, or a race tire?

Bridgestone RE-01 and Falken Azenis would be good, as they are popular and decently grippy street tires in the Street Touring classes that come in sizes that fit a Civic.

kumhos or toyos for budget "R" tires...

Shop around for some used tires.. can find good deals.
I get some from ebay time to time at a fraction of the cost of new ones.
They are good for practice.

205-55x14 Does anyone know of a good used set?

I woulldnt do anything for a while. Wait till Feb or even March as there may be a new one out thats better. Toyo and Kumo are to have new streets for 2008 some may be in limited sizes.

Yep, the EF Civic is a CSP car.

You can see why the '89-'91 Si is so good in STS. Just about everything else in the class is a DSP or FSP car when set up for Street Prepared. Not to mention that they're pretty much a boxier CRX, which is a STS2 car. Hrm.

The Bridgestone RE-01 is the pick for street tire compact cars since the Advans don't come in any small sizes. The 195/50-15 RE-01 is sized like a 205-width tire or bigger, which makes is a good choice for the Civics.

I certainly don't know my Honda's. I worked during the STS heat at Nats. was Honda after Honda. Thought it would never end.

There was another tire that would work in STS as a 15 inch. I think Toyo and Kumho are coming out with a tread ware rating of 140 which is ST limit. I tested the B-stone. Bought a set. didn't like the squirmy feel. The Yok felt like a R Comp more.

The B-stones are the favorite last year in STS - STS2 (or to be STR) as you said because of no other real tire available. STX can run larger. The favorite in that class was the Yok-A-betterhavesomecash tire. LOL

it will be interesting to see what comes out and who test them. I hope Yoks are the tire due to having about 10 in the garage that will be used for local events and my Co driver is blessed with coming up with a set. Ouch for him$$$
