Dodge cummins wants to race

Post by tristan21 » Tue May 13, 2008 10:30 pm

OK so ive done alittle research and I would like to run my truck. 2004 Dodge cummins 7200lb 4x4 quad cab SWB etc.

I assume I will get alot of snickerin and so forth but this truck runs 12's in the 1/4 and is around 650 on a dyno. It is a little smokey though.

I will be lowering it soon but it is a 4x4. What potential problems will I encounter with this?

A buddy in PA has been allowed to run in his under scca rules but it required an official to ride along the first few times. Either way I have the mustang I can run but im alot more interested in running this truck.

Even if exibition only I would be willing.

I think we need a rule book on this one... I dont think 4X4 Trucks are allowed... or maybe that was SUV's.... Im Un sure

Anyways Welcome To the board!!! And Welcome to the OMR!

We have already had one crazy azz truck join us this year... An old ford on Airbags, with some Nasty Mustang Cobra motor.... It was sick... Made Lots of noise.. scraped a little round corners, but looked like fun!

Somthing to keep in mind... the faster it is in the 1/4.... the more problems you would encounter on the ole Left and right... Should be fun!

I would wait to see what somone with RuleBook Know... Would have to say on the old 4X4 though... I could have swore up and down 4X4 trucks and SUV's cant run Autocross events... only RWD... Also it could be up to Safety Stewards....

speed is relative... ...but the feeling is absolute

I would have to see it, but as the Saftey Steward if it is stock hieght, or anywhere close I am going to have to so say no.

Bring hte mustang though and have fun with it.

It will be more fun than the truck anyway, you will never be able to use all that torque, and would have to walk though the corner.

Get that thing slammed and we can take another look at it. I would post pics once you do so you don't get out to the site and get turned away.

I am a big Cummins fan "though I know longer have mine" so I hope they let you race. But if they don't you would have a blast in your Mustang. I hope to see you out there. I have a friend who I think has the most build Cummins around, but if you are putting out 600+ RWHP I am sure he would love to drag race you somewhere. Would you be down??

Thats what I was affraid of. I got on the main scca forums page and asked the same question an was told that as longt as I could lower it to the point of makin it wider than it is tall then I would be ok. Im lookin at sone steel 17" wheels with some Toyo proxes or maybe som stock srt10 tires. I think they were Pirellis. They have a speed rating of like 180mph or somethin.

I have the intent to prove that these trucks, while heavy and big are good at whatever they do and still get 20-24mpg. The lowering on the truck is only temporary as eventually it will do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvLMwAIm ... re=related.

But for know Iwanna get some decent scca, drag, sled pull on top speed (salt flats) times and all those work better as low as you can get. I am tryin to talk the guys that run the pikes peak race to give me a shot at it before they get it all paved. That verdict is still out.

Right now it has 35" Pro Comp Extreme MT's on it but as soon as I get the lowered springs, rear sway bay, and different track bar I plan to get started on the competing.

I was supposed to pull at a sled pull in marshfield this saturday in Marshfield on saturday but my new clutch wont be in until Monday or tues. I kinda destroyed my old Dual disc doin burnouts after the 4wheel jamboree at the hotel last saturday. Had to show them v10's and dmaxes whos boss.

Anyway here is the dyno sheet
Image[/img] This was the lowest of the runs but it was the only one I got a sheet for. That was also fuel only, no spray and it was without any of the boxes. Shop owner speculates 700-725.

I also welcome you guys to come to the Ozark Blackout in Rogersville at the track in June. Sould have a dyno and lots of fast deisels from all over.

For you scca guys there is an article in last months Diesel Power about a friend of mine who owns FASS deisel from Marthasville, MO that raced at the Nevada open road race where they shut the highway down in tha desert and allow cars to run a 90mile streatch full of curves as you try to stay as close to youre decided time, they limited his diesel to `125mph but on an open exibition run they averaged close to 165 over the course. Im hopin to make it to that next year.

So yeah I could bring the stang but that wasnt my intent. Everybody knows you can get a car to handle great but a fulsize diesel is way more interesting. I might bring the stang the first time just to play and see how it goes.

Is it every sunday at duck stadium?

And Huff Im in a 6spd but I never pass up an opp to show what the truck is capable of. Have him go to the Blackout. Lemme know if you need details. There are alot of pulls in the area that if he's interested we could meet at also.

Im not gonna say i'll win as I speculate, humble is so much more fun, based others with similar setups that run mid to high 12's with less power. The same auto truck will run mid 11's Im lookin for that magic eleven this year as nobody in a 6spd has ever made it there. 12.2 I think is the best so far. I have a short throw BD shifter but these things arent meant for gear bangin down a strip rather tuggin a track hoe to tha ditch or a motor home to tha mountains.

Tristan,
My Buddy will be pulling in the Marshfield event this Saturday. It's to bad you burnt up your clutch and can't make it. The autox event's take place once a month and you can find the schedule on this web site. Look for me on Sunday, I drive a late model Mustang GT. My friend wants me to get the low down on your truck. It sounds like you may be his competition in some of the up coming events. Did you make it to the pull in Purdy a couple weeks ago?

I know a few people with Cummins Dodges with nowhere near 1300 ft-lb torque, and they go pretty hard. You can do a lot with less than 3,500 RPM!

Even bone stock, the Mustang will work much better for autocross, though. This sport favors lighter weight, shorter wheelbase, and narrower track width. Autocrossing has a lot of fast transition and variations in camber with lower top speeds. Power can sometimes be more of a liability than a help, and a high center of gravity can be dangerous. It's a different animal than a road course or twisty backroad, which is steady-state cornering linked by straights. Steering inputs and changes in suspension loading happen far more rapidly in autocrossing.

Get a feel for what goes on using the Mustang. We'll have about one event per month until it gets cold:

No I didnt make it to the Purdy pull as I was at work in Pryor, OK I think at that time.
Tell your buddy:
The truck is a silver 04.5 Quad cad 4x4 shrt bed, 6spd, SBC #3600 DualDisc, Bd shrt shftr, 6" single stainless stack, FASS 150 lift pump w/ filters, Aurora 5000 turbo, F1 3.3 flux Inj. (165hp or 145 I cant remember what 3.3's are rated for), Floor It stage 3 inj pump(cp3), Magnaflow exh, K&N filter, Banks Intercooler, Smarty Downloader with TNT non/r beta software stacked with an MP-8 preassure box, and a TST ra-49 programmer(the last 2 stay mostly unhooked for safty reasons). Im about as far as you can take a common rail diesel without runnin alot bigger turbo(s) and dual cp3's, Both of which would inable me to pull or fit into several pulling and racing classes in different forms of racing. Cut pistons, shot pean the stock rods and light head polish work is mostly all I can do motor wise.

I plan on bein there in Marshfield probably with my kiddos but the Dodge is at Phils 4x4 shop in Marshfield waitin on tha clutch to get back from south bend. It was gonna cost me an extra $200 for shipping to get it here on time for tha pull and tha wife put tha kabosh to that in a hurry. "CUMMINS" is a bad word in my houshold on all levels. I was hopin to have valve springs and a cam before I pull so I can use the TNT/r and run 4000 rpm down tha track but thats another couple grand and I truly dont have time to do the labor intensive install myself (the motor must be lifted and the front end removed to get the cams switched out and you must pull the head and injectors. Not on the schedule right now. I still need to build ladder bars (Caltracs style) and driveshaft loops and move the hitch point a little farther forward. Tha wife wants me to work on the home addition, BOOOO.

But tell him to come out to the Raymondville/ houston, MO pull on the 24th. Im pretty good friends with the guy putting it on. Its a Show-me smokers pull. www.show-mesmokers.com. I will make that one for sure and the Rogersville Blackout. Is you buddy on any of the forums? I think im on all the Dodge and otherwise(compd, heartland diesel, DTR, TDR, etc) diesel sites with the same name tristan21 or on a few as BLACKJACK.

JimR
I will certainly make atleast one of the shows with the stang atleast. Its funny I only bought this car cause it was a decent priced economy car and I needed a way to get back to work while I have the truck getting worked on. I will give it a go with that first and see what the truck needs for the next one. I cant make it this sunday since ive been gone at work in Oklahoma for most of the last 4 months and my wife and 5 kids are missin me. I havnt been to church in quite a while and my youngest son is gettin baptised that day so maybe in june.

Also on the high hp and tq concerns you guys have mentioned I thought I woul also mention it only takes like 20min to get from a 650 to 700 hp race truck to a 400-425 commuter. Computer controlled diesels are truly amazing. My point is if the power hurts me I can drop it way down.

Sounds like alot of fun. Also do you guys know of any other road course racing I might be allowed to do in the truck? I used to know the owners of West Plains speedway back when I raced modifieds and im hoping he will let me make a few laps on a practice day out there next year.

I know im crazy so feel free to openly express your disbeleifs or doubts on me it helps to keep me motivated.

Am I the king of run-on posts or what? Sorry.

Tristan,
You definitely have a well built truck. My friend saw your truck a Baillies, I guess when you were having some chips installed. You have some thing's he doesn't have and vice versa so it would be a good match up in a pull or a drag. He will be at Marshfield on Saturday, his name is Ken and drives a gray 07 mega cab dually.
