The IRL and Detroit rejected it as an IndyCar design, but the designers had the last laugh because it actually works. Nissan saw its potential as a Le Mans car, and supplied a smaller-than-average engine based on their standard Juke turbo 1.6L. Nothing else looks like it, so it's a billboard on wheels in a world of stagnant shapes and forms.

The Autoextremist says:
By supporting the DeltaWing racing program Nissan is sending a message that they are indeed a forward thinking, visionary car company and they will be doing it on the world's biggest stage for sports car racing and the world's most prestigious endurance event - the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I can also assure everyone that for what little Nissan is putting into this project they will reap $100 million+ in media coverage and brand recognition by participating in the DeltaWing program. This is a real coup for Nissan on every level.
The Deltawing has low drag, thanks to a small frontal cross-section. It's physically smaller than most LM prototypes, so it needs less fuel and less engine. Since most of the weight is biased towards the rear wheels and aero is so refined, the front mechanical grip of huge tires isn't critical.

Cool design or a little too phallic?

Surely Nissan has considered and rejected dry ice so moving on.....
what happens if it rains? Sometimes people who think "outside the box" think too far outside the box. Great publicity generator though.... :shock:

Whether it be a six-wheeled Tyrrell, Chaparral vacuum car, or dry ice oil cooler, sometimes the best ideas are too far ahead of their time.

Dan Panoz, Chip Ganassi, Dan Gurney, Michelin, Nissan, and Highcroft Racing are blue chip racing names, so I think they're onto something, at least a pretty credible publicity machine.

If Ted is right and it won't work in the rain they could just get it approved for competition with NASCAR Those pretty boys just sit around in their trailers watching the fans get soaked. Then race after it drys out.

I'm told that has more to do with Oval-Track Racing, than "NASCAR" itself. As (essentially) all NASCAR drives IS Ovals; by default, they sit and thumb-twiddle (or tweet to their fans!).

well, they use to race the road courses in the rain... but they stopped that too...

Le Mans 24 Hr. Test Day

At the Le Mans 24 Hour race Test Day on Sunday, June 3, everyone's favorite batmobile posted the 32nd quickest lap - 3 min 47.980 sec. Fastest lap went to one of the Audi hybrids driven by Allan McNish - 3 min 25.927 sec. Sixty-one machines were able to post times.
