Labor Day OMRSCCA RallyCross
Monday, September 5, 2011
Farm Road 1015
Wheaton, MO [Map]

Take the day off and get dirty with the first OMRSCCA RallyCross of 2011. We have a new site in the rolling Ozark hills of Southwest Missouri, and this will be a great chance to get some unpaved seat time one month before the SCCA RallyCross National Championships in Tulsa.

Register Online!

Note: Events use online registration via MotorsportReg. Additional registration instructions here.

1. About
What is RallyCross?
RallyCross is like our "Solo" autocross program, but on an open field. Drivers attempt to set their best time on an agility course marked by cones, and cars are grouped in classes based on capability and level of modification. Courses are a little more open and speeds are a little lower that autocrosses, but the emphasis on accessibility, safety, affordability, and fun is the same as SCCA Solo.

RallyCross differs from stage rally that many have seen on television. There are no jumps or ditches, and roll cages are not required. Drivers preview the course by walking it or going on a low-speed lead-and-follow lap, rather than following the pace notes of a navigator. Competitors will have the opportunity to make a number of runs.

RallyCross doesn't take the best single run like in Solo, but is a combination of multiple runs.

What kind of car do I need?
No special rally car is needed. Any fixed-roof vehicle passing a basic safety inspection is fine, so your daily-driven sedan on street tires is perfect for Rallycross. Review the RallyCross technical inspection requirements here. For safety reasons, rollover-prone vehicles such as SUVs, 4x4's, and many full-sized trucks will not be allowed to compete. If you have any questions about the eligibility of your vehicle, please ask the event chairman here.

From the SCCA RallyCross rules:
A RallyCross event is open to any fixed-roof production based vehicle (including convertibles with a factory hardtop attached, targa types with factory panel in place, t-tops with factory panels in place) that can pass safety inspection. If the Event Chairman after consultation with the Event Safety Steward determines at his discretion that a vehicle cannot safely negotiate the course, it may be excluded.

2. Requirements
Entry fee
  • $25 - SCCA members pre-registered
  • $30 - SCCA members not pre-registered
  • $40 - all non-SCCA members (price includes SCCA weekend membership, discount voucher for SCCA annual membership)
Entry requirements
1. Valid Driver's license. Anyone under age 18 on the site, participant or otherwise, must have their parents/guardians sign a SCCA minor waiver on site, or in the presence of an OMR Solo/Rally committee member, board member, or notary public. Note: a learner's permit requiring a licensed passenger is not allowed per SCCA RallyCross rules.

2. Safe vehicle per technical inspection guidelines.

3. Must wear an approved helmet during competition. We have a limited number of loaner helmets available. If you bring your own, it must meet one of the following standards (DOT rating alone is not sufficient):
  • Snell 1995 (SA95, M95, or K98) or newer
  • British Standards 6658-85 type A/FR, including all amendments
  • SFI Foundation Spec 31.1
Work/Run
There will be two heats. Like Solo, RallyCross is a self-worked, volunteer-run sport in which competitors have a work heat opposite their run heat. Prepare to be outdoors all day, and dress and prepare accordingly.

3. Location
Where is Wheaton? As a general reference, it's about 20 miles East of Crowder College in Neosho and 20 miles Southwest of Monett. You can get to the site in about an hour from Springfield, Joplin, or Rogers on 100% paved roads.

Directions
- Wheaton RallyCross on Google Maps.

Plug your address into Google Maps for specific directions.

Wheaton is a small town with limited eating choices, so it's a good idea to make sure you've packed everything you need before you get there. We do not have plans to provide lunch on site at this time, but we will update you if that changes.

4. Cars & Information
Classing
RallyCross has a simple classing structure.
  • Rally Stock - FWD (SF), RWD (SR), and AWD (SA) - upgrades are limited to items such as cat-back exhaust, brake pads, clutch and pressure plate, and wheels and DOT-legal tires that are near stock dimensions.
  • Rally Prepared - FWD (PF), RWD (PR), and AWD (PA) - adds specific allowances for upgraded intake, exhaust, suspension, differential, wheels, etc.
  • Rally Modified - 2WD (M2) and AWD (M4) - almost any production car or logbooked racecar is allowed, with drivetrain and suspension being unrestricted.
Recommended
  • Sunscreen, hats, non-alcoholic drinks, poncho, etc. - be ready for all weather.
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes, bug repellant - you will be on a field for walking and working course
  • Tires inflated to max PSI - it is uncommon for tires to break from the bead of the rim, but inflate street tires as a precaution.
  • Spare tire - tire damage is not anticipated, but we will be running on dirt. Make sure to bring a spare.
  • Window cleaner - be prepared for a dusty environment
  • Numbers and class letters - magnetic or vinyl letters are preferred, but tape in a contrasting color is acceptable. Cars must be clearly marked on each side so that corner workers may read them from their stations.

With the RallyCross only one week away, I need to see that we'll have enough people to run the event.

If you intend to go, you need to pre-register now. If the weekend rolls around and we don't have enough to entrants to work the event, we'll have to cancel and communicate in advance.

Paddock/Grid area will be mown, some of the course may be mown (time constraint) - competitors and workers should prepare for tall grass (i.e. bring plenty of bug-repellent). Bring boards for jacks/stands - there is no pavement at the farm.

Everyone, with just 12 people signed up we are kind of on the edge of having enough participants to make the event happen. If you are planning on going please Pre-Register, it only takes a couple of minutes, and will save time in the registration line. Be sure to tell your friends if you think they would be interested.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

It's on. Let's make it official in case you were wondering.

Get off the fence and join us on Monday. The weather forecast is awesome, with a high of 76 and no rain.

Don't forget to pack some bug spray, sun screen, and lunch.

On the subject of "FOOD": There is a little Mom-&-Pop in Wheaton that will be open Labor Day until 3:00pm - the "Country N" on hwy 86 near hwy "W". They serve burgers, sandwiches, "home-cooking", etc. - the catch is, they do not take Debit/Credit cards.

I talked with them today; they are aware we're having this event, and asked (in the interest of better service) if we would call-ahead before we inundate them.

How many would be up for a call-in "mass order" that one or two people fetch? Most sandwiches started @ ~3.00, burgers @~4.00, included chips, fries extra(?) (unclear on that).

I tried the chicken-fried-steak sandwich today: Verdict is "Pretty Darn Good".

We have had the burgers there before: better than McDonalds, by far.

And maybe a jacket, after the summer we have been having we are all going to be "freezing" if it gets down to 50 deg in the morning.

A couple more called me today and the count is up to 17 now, see everyone in the morning.
